10:00AM - Arrival in Durres
As you step into Durres, you step into a timeless realm steeped in history. Explore iconic landmarks that weave the tale of this ancient city's rich heritage. Durres, nestled on Albania's vibrant coastline, seamlessly blends history, culture, and the mesmerizing allure of the Mediterranean. Renowned as one of the Balkans' oldest and most pivotal port cities, Durres promises a wealth of experiences for travelers and history aficionados alike. Its illustrious history spans nearly 3,000 years, solidifying its status as the eternal city overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
Visit to the main attractions of Durres
Roman Amphitheatre:Our journey through Durres begins with a visit to its renowned Amphitheater, which stands as one of the most majestic in the ancient world and ranks among the ten most beautiful Roman amphitheaters. Widely celebrated among Antiquity enthusiasts, it shines as a gem of the Balkans, gradually emerging from its historical cocoon. Discovered relatively recently in 1966, its excavation unfolded in a somewhat comical manner, thanks to the persistence of Vangjel Toçi, an archaeologist and Durres resident. Legend has it that Vangjel stumbled upon the site while investigating a fallen fig tree, leading to the revelation of the hidden Amphitheater beneath. Dating back to the 2nd century B.C., this Amphitheater of Durres stands as a testament to Roman ingenuity, enduring as one of the region's greatest architectural marvels and a legacy of Roman emperor Trajan.
Old Byzantine walls:On the way to the Amphitheater, visitors encounter the ancient City Walls, constructed with enduring blocks that have withstood the test of time. These walls, serving as a defensive fortification, bear the imprints of various rulers who governed the city over the ages. Originally built by Byzantine emperor Anastasius I in the 4th century A.D., they stood at an impressive height of 18 meters and were later reinforced by emperor Justinian with small observation towers. The Ottoman Empire later modified the walls, reducing their size to create a more compact living space within.
Venetian Tower:The Venetian Tower, an integral part of the Byzantine fortress of Durres, stands as one of the most fascinating historical defensive structures in the city. Initially constructed by Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I in the 5th century, it was fortified with cannons in the 15th century to safeguard against maritime threats. Renovated in 2022-2023, the tower has been transformed into the first Albanian Heritage Interpretation Center, offering visitors immersive experiences of the city's ancient history through state-of-the-art digital and multimedia tools.
